Celebrating Innovation and Learning at the USITT: A Look Back at the XSF Truss Inspection Challenge
The USITT tradeshow has always been a landmark event for theatre technology enthusiasts and eager students. This year, at the heart of booth #2824, was the XSF Truss Inspection Challenge, a unique competition designed to engage and inspire the next generation of industry professionals.
Amidst the bustling aisles of the tradeshow, students from various schools were given a hands-on opportunity to inspect and evaluate a short section of truss, a crucial skill in our industry.
XSF would like to congratulate our student winner Mich Ohata along with the winning school, U Conn University. Awesome Job! We would also like to thank everyone who participated in the XSF Truss Inspection Challenge.
FROM THE DESK of Tim Kruse, President of XSF Truss:
“We had a blast at this year’s USITT Conference in Seattle. Not only did we have a chance to meet up with our fellow industry comrades in a much more laid-back atmosphere than some of the other industry tradeshows, but we also connected with numerous students and faculty, especially through our Truss Inspection Challenge.
We didn’t just test their knowledge of the ANSI Entertainment Technology Standard E1.2; we also worked with them and gave pointers on how to properly inspect a piece of truss. My hat’s off to all who participated, especially those who won some of our great prizes.
We look forward to building on this model for future USITT conferences.”

CONGRATULATIONS to our $500 Student Scholarship Winner, Mich Ohata from Western Washington University
Our winning student, Mich, who was very observant and enthusiastic, shared his experience:
“I can say confidently that, though my previous experience in set building and knowing basic aspects of welding helped, ultimately it was identifying patterns, support systems, and persistence that helped me with this challenge.
I would like to thank the XSF staff for this opportunity and USITT for making this learning opportunity possible.”

CONGRATULATIONS to the University of Connecticut on their BIG WIN of a $1000 CASH CREDIT at XSF TRUSS
University of Connecticut brought the most student participants to the XSF Truss Inspection Challenge at Booth #2824.
Edward Weingart, the esteemed Technical Direction Head from University of Connecticut, shared these wonderful sentiments: “I’ve always admired XSF truss for their innovation. The Truss Inspection Challenge at this year’s expo was more than just a competition; it was a rare, hands-on learning experience in rigging for students.”
Well said, and thank you to Edward Weingart and the UConn Participants!
